This small deoartment has it all, but is just beginning to be developed tourism industry, worth to spend a few days there if you have enough time.
The main economic activity is agriculture and livestock, with coffee and citrus crops the main agricultural activities.
The two major cities in the department are known as “Twin Cities” -the capital Jinotepe and Diriamba-. Both share the same religious and folk festivals, which are very famous nationwide. If you are in the area during the holidays and have not seen the “Baile del toro guaco”, the festivities in honor of San Sebastian and Santiago, and dancing in “El güegüense”, you’ll do it. It is really awesome!
The department has also six more municipalities, most of them located in north and engaged in agriculture, emphasizing the municipalities of San Marcos and Concepción.
Though little known, the beaches of Carazo are excellent for a few days, both beaches Huehuete and Tupilapa Jinotepe, such as La Boquita or Playa Chacocente, where an important refuge for wildlife in coming to spawn thousands of Paslama turtles every year.
